What Supplies Do You Actually Need to Start an Airbnb? (The Essential Host Checklist)

You don’t need to overthink it. You don’t need luxury décor or 17 different pillow sets. But you do need to be prepared. Whether you’re setting up your very first Airbnb or restocking an existing unit, having the right essentials makes the difference between a 3-star “meh” review and a 5-star experience that keeps guests coming back. Here’s the no-fluff checklist of what you actually need to run a successful short-term rental—no overbuying, no guessing, no missed basics.

1. Bedding Essentials

  • 2 full sets of sheets for each bed (white or light colors preferred)
  • 2–4 pillows per bed (plus extras in the closet)
  • Mattress protector + pillow protectors
  • Comforter or duvet with cover (easy to wash)
  • Spare blanket or throw for couch or foot of bed
Pro tip: Stick to white sheets—they look clean, feel hotel-like, and are easy to bleach between guests.

2. Towel & Bathroom Basics

  • 2 bath towels per guest (minimum)
  • 1 hand towel and 1 washcloth per guest
  • Bath mat
  • Toilet paper (at least 2 rolls per stay)
  • Hair dryer
  • Plunger + toilet brush
  • Toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap (full-size bottles or neatly portioned)
Optional but nice: cotton swabs, feminine products, mouthwash, or a small first-aid kit

3. Kitchen & Food Prep

  • Plates, bowls, cups, mugs (for at least 4 guests, more if you host families)
  • Full set of utensils
  • Knife set + cutting board
  • Frying pan, saucepan, baking sheet
  • Coffee maker or kettle (or both)
  • Coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper, cooking oil
  • Dish soap, sponge, paper towels, trash bags
  • Fridge, microwave, and either a stovetop or toaster oven
Bonus: wine opener, bottle opener, Tupperware, aluminum foil, scissors

4. Living Room Comfort

  • Smart TV with Netflix, YouTube, or streaming access
  • High-speed Wi-Fi (include the password on a printed card)
  • Comfortable seating for your guest count
  • Side tables or coffee table
  • Lamps or cozy lighting (no one likes bright overhead lights at night)
Add a few books, magazines, or a local guidebook to make it feel homey without clutter.

5. Cleaning Supplies for Guests & Cleaners

  • Vacuum or broom + dustpan
  • Mop or Swiffer
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Laundry detergent (if washer/dryer is available)
Leave a few of these out for guests—they’ll appreciate being able to clean up spills or messes.

6. Safety Items (Required or Recommended)

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Fire extinguisher
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight or emergency light
  • Deadbolt or smart lock on main entry
Airbnb may require these in some areas—don’t skip this list.

7. Extras That Impress

  • Full-length mirror
  • Luggage rack
  • Blackout curtains or blinds
  • Robes or slippers
  • USB charging station
  • Umbrella or reusable shopping bags
These aren’t required, but they will get mentioned in 5-star reviews.

"

Started with BookedHosts in 2019 and they have helped me through all the toughest times, including covid. Their professional, high-quality, caring and loyal staff have showed me time and time again how easy it is to own multiple properties while being a full-time mom and lawyer. I couldn’t be more thankful to be able to trust a team in handling everyday tasks and those once-in-a-while difficult ones.
